Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund arrived Abuja on Tuesday on a three-day working visit aimed at renewing and enhancing support for voluntary family planning.
The Executive Director led a high level delegation of UNFPA officials to a meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Alhaji Muhammed Musa Bello, to intimate the minister of the DFID and UNFPA programs in Nigeria, while advocating for voluntary family planning. He also advocated for more sustainable funding for contraceptives procurement and investments in health workers. Officials of the UNFPA at the meeting include Mabingue Ngom( Regional Director WCARO), Beatrice Mutali (Deputy Regional Director/ Resident Rep, Nigeria) Gifty Addico (Chief, Commodity Security Branch) Dr Demola Olajide (Chief, Non Core Funds Management) Eugene Kongnyny (Dep Rep UNFPA Nigeria) Osaretin Adunni, Niyi Ojuolape and Olanike Adedeji.
The FCT Minister on his part, pledged his support for all of UNFPA’s programs and assured the ED that he and his staff will render very assistance to them. The Minister was accompanied to the meeting by top level officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration including Mr Babatope Ajakaiye (Permanent Secretary FCT), Odey-Achu, A.I (Mrs) (Acting Secretary, HHSS), Dr Aminu Mai (GM, Health Management Board), Dr M.B. Kawu (Director, Health Planning Research and Statistics, FCT), Dr Iwot (Director, Primary Health Care, Primary Health Care Board, FCT), Dr Ashikeni (Director, Planning Research and Statistics, Primary Health Care Board), Dr Okoroukwu (Director Public Health), Dr Yakubu Mohammed (Acting Director, Disease Control Primary Health Care Board), Mrs Mariam Momoh (FCT Coordinator, Family Planning), Hajia Binta Ismail (FCT Coordinator, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency NPHCDA)
