Accelerating the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and scaling up access to antiretroviral treatment for children and adolescents in West and Central Africa (WCA) is the subject that will bring together 100 health experts and professionals from 21 West and Central African countries in N’Djamena, Chad, from 24 to 25 November 2016.

There is a growing gap between WCA and the East and Southern African subregions in terms of antiretroviral coverage for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Furthermore, the African Region is facing a growing and poorly controlled HIV epidemic among adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years.

This regional consultation, which is organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the other members of the Joint United Nations Regional Team on HIV/AIDS (JURTA), is coming after the first consultation on eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and scaling up paediatric care of HIV, which was held in November 2015 and led to the Dakar Call for Action.

The second meeting will afford health experts and professionals the opportunity to review progress in the implementation of the Dakar Call for Action, notably in relation to paediatric care and the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in WCA countries, and to discuss challenges and possible solutions for overcoming them.

Additionally, participants at the meeting will draw up a new road map for accelerating the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and improving access to antiretroviral treatment for children and adolescents in West and Central Africa.
