The West African Health Organisation is staging simulation of a Yellow fever epidemic in Lagos to check the region’s preparedness for an outbreak.

The simulation by WAHO and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is to help public-health mechanisms to management emergencies.

NCDC said in a statement the simulation is to “provide various partner institutions with a national and regional coordination framework for a multi-sectoral response to a public health emergency.”

The focus on Yellow fever comes amidst a re-emergence of the disease after many years, the centre said.

Multiple outbreaks since September 2017 increasingly threaten urban areas.

At least infections suspected to be Yellow fever have been recorded across 16 states. Some 45 people who contracted the disease have died.

A total 25 million people are scheduled to be vaccinated in campaigns that have already started in Zamfara, Kogi and Kwara.
