The United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, has condemned a deadly attack on a camp for displaced people in Dalori and called on the government to step up protection for innocents.
The camp is only a few kilometres from Borno state capital, Maiduguri, and hosts 12,600 civilians displaced from their homes.
“Attacks on camps for internally displaced people threaten these innocent women, children and men who have already fled their homes as a result of the ongoing conflict,” Kallon said.
The attack on the camp and four surrounding communities occurred by night.
At least eight people were killed and dozens injured.
The attackers also burnt and looted homes, shelters and food stock and kidnapped some women.
The National Emergency Management Agency says hundreds of people have been displaced in the wake of the attack.
The Dalori camp, set up in 2015, is one of nine for displaced people in Dalori.
All nine now shelter some 47,500 civilians.
More than 20 aid organisations are providing assistance including food, safe water, sanitation, medicine and shelter to thousands of people.
In January 2016 a non-state armed group attack Dalori village, killing more than 100 people and burning most of the village down.
