A Japan Airlines plane is on fire after landing on a runway at the Haneda airport in Tokyo, the country’s capital city.

The incident which occurred on Tuesday left the runway razed.

According to NHK, a national broadcaster, the plane collided with what appeared to be a Japan Coast Guard aircraft after landing at the airport.

Live footage showed the aircraft erupt in flames as it skidded down the tarmac, despite desperate efforts by rescue crews to control the blaze.

Videos shared by media platforms showed huge orange balls of fire engulfing the plane and thick plumes of smoke wafting into the air.

Sirens blared in the background depicting the deployment of emergency rescue services.

A spokesperson at Japan Airlines said the aircraft had departed from Shin-Chitose airport on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Haneda has closed all runways following the incident, the airport spokesperson said.
